Ford 2000 3cyl diesel blow-by?

So, I have this ford 2000 3cyl diesel with unknown hours I
bought at an auction.

It runs well, but seems to have a lot of blow by coming out of
the valve cover breather tube.

Ive gone thru the lift cover and power steering column, new
clutch and fixed the rusted in place ball detents on the shift
rails. All of this was possible from help on this site.

Does anyone have any input on whether I should re-ring the
engine and clean up the valves and valve seats? Or should I
just run it as it is and see how it goes?

Thank you.

How does it start in cold weather? If it starts good, I'd ignore it. If it starts hard, you can either re-ring the engine or else install a block heater.

I'm with Bern on this. I had a 3 cylinder for twenty years with blowby that even slobbered but the thing ran like a top with tons of power so I left it as is.

How does it start? Does the exhaust stay white or go clean after 10 seconds or so. If starts good, exhaust cleans up quickly, no missing, low oil consumption, then run it.

Due to the long stoke on diesels, there is a lot of air movement in the crank case, due to pistons moving up and down. This means a lot of air is moving OUT, and back IN to the crank case vent. And when cold, and warming up, there will be condensation in this air. And also running a non hd diesel oil, the oil will vaporize more....due to splashing and can be blown out as well. So its easy to be over concerned as there will always be a bit of blowby on a diesel engine..

SO.. if it starts well, doesnt miss, drive it more, worry less. If it wont start, misses badly, goes through oil, you might want to do something.

Along with what STexBill said, and adding to it, hard starting is a sign of worn rings if you have that problem......low compression. If valve guides are worn, you let it idle for a few minutes then goose it. If you get blue smoke its them.

I hooked a section of garden hose to the vent pipe and drilled and tapped a hole in the intake manifold on one of my Fords that I was tired of smelling the blow-by. Put a hose barb-NPT male in there and that was the end of that.
