555B Steering issue

Hello all,

I've got an old 555b backhoe that I'm having steering issues with. Sometimes it will steer left and right normally, then all of a sudden it will not turn either direction. I threw a new P/S pump at it because these pumps have always seemed to be weak on my other Ford tractors. It did not help. Steering still locks up randomly. There are normal (for age) leaks in the cylinders/hoses but nothing major. Pump reservoir is fill and pump has a brand new filter in it.

Any ideas? Thanks

Even if nothing is leaking excessively externally, there could still be leaking internally past the seals of the cylinders or it could be debris in the hydraulic fluid that is intermittently clogging something, or it could be the steering motor needs to be rebuilt.

I have not been able to find anywhere, what actually goes bad inside the steering motor. I can take that apart but I would like to know what I'm looking for.

I can't imagine the problem is in the steering cylinders if it locks up randomly. Does it have good assist
when it does steer normal? If so, I'd speculate that you have some foreign material floating around in the
steering motor.
