4500 ford tractor both diesel and gas

Hey Larry,
Here is what Tractor Data shows for your 4500, see below. I plan on using my gasoline 3000 year round so I prefer a thinner oil to help in the fall and winter temperatures. In VA it doesn't really get any colder than about 15 degrees so I went with 10W-40 so I'd be covered in the summer too. Depending on what part of PA you're in, I think a 10W multi-viscosity would be fine unless you see single digits and then I might go 5W-30 or something like that. Hope that helps.

What sweetskillsrk posted were the factory recommendations back when that tractor was made, before the prevalence of modern mult-viscosity oils. Most folks these days run a good C rated multi-viscosity detergent motor oil. Lots of folks swear by Shell Rotella. 5W-40 should work year round for you.

Sounds good I have been running 30 viscosity and was thinking
its why I have trouble starting them in the cold weather they live
outside thanks for the info

Sounds good we get cold up in the Mts thanks might just
experiment see which gets best results I have 3 old 4500s thanks
any ideas where to get good filters? Reasonable

Yeah, a straight 30W would be awful thick in the cold. I run a Donaldson P550008 on my 3000, which is what my F250 takes as well, so it's convenient and Donaldson makes a good product. Personally I'm not a Fleetguard or Baldwin fan, I've seen too many engine and component failures at work because of cheapo filters. I think Wix is a good option too so if you have a Napa close, that's who I'd go to, or Rock Auto.

What Sean said,, plus,, if your doing a lot of winter work, then the more expensive 5w-40 hd oil will help it start,, if not using it below 15 degrees, the a 15w-40 will be fine for starting. If you have a block heater or heated garage, a 15w-40 will be fine as you can start it easier in even colder weather. I dont plow/plant/bale much around here when its below freezing in my area, so I can get away with the 15w-40 hd oil. ;)

Just my opinion and what I use, I use Mobil Delvac 15w-40 in my tractors both gas and diesel. It's available everywhere and works fine. Mobil also has a rebate program a couple of times a year which also makes the price attractive. I also use Mobil oils in all of my family's vehicles that I maintain and poured it as my main oil when I had my automotive repair shop.
If you have a diesel make sure you have a plug in coolant heater and use it in the winter.

(quoted from post at 13:12:58 11/29/22) I found Shell Rotella. 5W-40 full synthetic for a fair price would that work in an older tractor ?

Rotella T6 5W-40 is what I use in everything diesel I have from 2016 truck to 1966 tractor.
