4500 diesel Can I add an inline fuel filter after the ma

Somehow the filter in my CAV pump got clogged to the point where fuel flow was stopped. Can I add a paper element inline filter fuel filter in between the main filter and the pump? It shouldn't hurt anything, right? I know the filter in the tank and the main filter should stop anything but it didn't. Watching Vice Grip garage on youtube, those little filters seem to do a good job catching varnish and gunk on the the wrecks that guy uses them on. Any reason not to use one?

If you can find one that is rated for the fuel type (diesel), pressure and flow rate of that system then sure, but don't just buy the first one you see expecting it to work properly without checking its specs.

If something got past the filters in that system then you need to either change the filters more often or clean out the tank, or both. Adding another filter is a band-aid, at least in my opinion.

You'd have to be careful not to get one that's too fine because it would be on the suction side of the pump.
I completely agree with Sean, if you need another filter then you really need to remove the tank and clean
out the crap.

Is the oring in place on nub filter goes upon? I have had problems with Fram filters not fitting tite enough on inner bore with new oring. Learned that on 3500, cost pump rebuild.

These tractors were designed to run thousands of hours. Clean your fuel tank, check the screen on the tank shutoff, install the quality fuel filters properly and your tractor should perform as intended.

That cartridge filter should stop everything to the
point the motor will stop. The filter in the pump is
not a service filter and there should never be
anything in it. Its only purpose in life is to catch
some stray chip of paint or metal sliver that may
occur whenever the system is opened. Your
problem is a damaged filter or incorrect assembly,
allowing unfiltered fuel to pass by.

replacing the main filter today. It did seem odd that stuff got past the filter to me. I was just thinking if I could place a similar filter outside the pump it would be easier to monitor and change if something gets past the main one again.

Will change the filter and clean the tank as well. I was thinking more of an additional filter being something I could visually monitor and change if it got clogged rather than the one in the pump. I know its not ideal, the tractor was designed with 3 filters that should do the job, but if an additional filter saved me from going into the pump it would be short money well spent.

Its did seem odd something got past the main. I would think it would clog the main and stop flow if anything, not get past it, unless the main was damaged internally somehow. Changing the main today and will cut it open and see what it looks like.

If the main filter is good and installed correctly, the engine should quit when the filter is plugged. Nothing should get past it
other than fuel...
I'd check the housing out carefully, install a new filter and clean the tank.

Filter had a ton of varnish on both top and bottom :/ Like a thick coating. Top and bottom of the housing had a bunch too. I cleaned and wire brushed the bottom and have the top soaking overnight. The lines going out to the pump ran clean after a few sprays with carb cleaner but the line from the tank to the filter keeps running dark when I spray carb cleaner threw it.
Might just replace it.
Will clean out the tank also.

Do it. Rust and other debris will pile up around the tank output filter screen and cut off your fuel flow when the tank is nearly empty.
BTDT. May not need to replace valve/screen assy. If its not leaking, pull it out, clean out the tank, screen and fuel line to the fuel
filter and reinstall with a thread sealer. No sense buying one if you don't need it.

That little screen stopped up on the 5600 last year while mowing hay and again this year
That screen stopped up on the 4000 this year
I thought I may has some algae in the 5600 tank but I m wondering if some of these new filters are not filtering as fine was they used to
Maybe they are 15-20 micron filters instead of 7-10 micron
