1964 Ford 2000 backfire then shuts down.

Engine was running rough but today I went to start it and it was backfiring real bad then it died and will not
start. Pulled the plug on the bottom of carb and getting plenty of gas. Where to start on the electrical part?

Pull the center wire off the distributor cap and hold it close to the engine block. Then try to start it. You should get a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. Then if you have spark there do it with the plug wires. Points may have slipped or the cap is cracked etc.

Firing order and timing don't change on there own unless the drive gear on the end of the distributor strips

Or.....
The hold down clamp or tightening arm screw for the distributor gets loose. Just went through this on my 530CK this past summer. Took me a bit to realize what was happening.
