Update from posts from last winter. The issue was random delayed shifts progressing to no shifts, in both forward and reverse. Root cause was a weak ground where the main wiring harness grounds on the alternator and then through the alternator bracket.
Found a post on tractorbynet for 545C with info from a Ford tech bulletin about adding a second ground from harness to frame.
My large service manual for the 345C-445C-545C had minimal info on troubleshooting the 8x8 transmission. I found a post on a question and answer site that had a pdf of about 15 pages from the 345D-445D-545D manual, with an excellent troubleshooting flowchart on this transmission. There are meter readings for the shifter positions and the internal solenoids.
I hope this will help someone in the future.
