Ford 4000 transmission

I have a '69 3 cylinder 4000 with the 8 speed transmission. I have a problem getting it into reverse. It wants to go into 2 gears at once. It sometimes does it if the front end is downhill too much. I'm going to split it this winter. How much does that transmission weigh?

The 4x2 transmissions(as well as many other transmissions) are well known for going into two gears at once, due to sloppy shifting over time. The sides of the shift lever get worn, as well as the lips on the shift gates. It can usually be cured by building up the sides of the shift lever ball, and filing it back to original width, or replacing the lever, and careful shifting in a definite H pattern.

If it's the shifter and the gates, as skipperII said, and is the most likely cause, there is no need to remove the transmission, so the weight of the trans should not be the question. You should be able to remedy the problem by removing the transmission top cover that the shifters are attached to.

A manual transmission like that going into 2 gears at once is theoretically impossible if the shift rail interlocks are in place and functioning as they should. And I've never seen them fail or fall out on their own.

More likely the OP has a broken shift fork. That could cause a transmission to be in two gears at the same time.

If the transmission is shifting into two gears it will lock up the transmission and the tractor won t move
This can only happen if there s a broken shift fork, a shift fork has came loose from the rail, or someone s had the transmission apart and left out the inner lock pins. Had a 3930 transmission come to me like that.
If the shifter is coming out of the gate and hanging up it s most likely a worn shift top that needs rebuilt or replaced

I don t know what a 4000 8 spd weighs but I d guess more than 500 and less than 1000 lbs, the extra 8 spd I have in the shed is a lot harder to manhandle than a small block V8 car engine that weighs around 500lbs

Ive seen this on several loader tractors where there was tons of shifting done. pulling the cover and putting the shift rails back into neutral, was a temp fix for locking up the trans.. then welding on to the end of the shift lever was also a patch, but too much would mean it would no longer fit into the slots, too little and it would miss a rail coming back to neutral.. but the top cover also was worn badly, letting the stick move more than it should, the alignment pin is some cases was worn off and had to be replaced as you could spin the shifter around in circles. Best fix was to simply get an aftermarket top cover with all new parts to fix it.

Note that there were two different positions for the neutral safety starter switch, early and late,,, and the new cover may mess that up as its set for the later switch iirc.
