Grease worms

As you can see, the owner of this tractor has a classic case of grease worm infestation on his farm. At least he got his money's worth out of the bushings. The slot from top to bottom is where I cut it out with a torch. The rest of it simply vanished.

There was so much slop in the spindles that they came out without even having to remove the woodruff key first. Surprisingly, even though the spindles were heavily pitted, they weren't worn all that much and new bushings brought it back to almost-new clearances. Yes, the owner is a tight wad.

Now I've seen some dairy tractors that were pretty eaten up, and a few used Fordson Majors that looked like they were drug behind the ship, from Great Britain. Can't say that I've ever seen seen one that bad.

Yep got all the good out of them including thrust bearing. Years ago had one with froze spindles, dead grease and water in winter.

Here are the tie rods ends on the same tractor. By welding them up he gets extra mileage out of them, until the joint falls out of the socket and the tractor ends up in the ditch!

This tractor seriously had 1/2 steering wheel turn worth of play in it, worst I've ever seen.

Makes you wonder did the operator ever think that a few shots of grease would make it steer a whole lot easier.

I have a customer that would cut a slot in a big flat washer slide over the worn area on the tie rod and weld the washer in place. Ran it a few more years like that.
