Looking at a 65-67 4000 Gasser

Hi Folks,

There is the above tractor in my local want adds for a fair price.
Claims good rubber, new starter and a recent tune up. I plan on
using it to mow 18 acres.

Any thoughts or watchouts outside of the usual used tractor look
over.

Beside being thirsty, other thoughts on the gasser. It's $3K less
than comparable diesels I can find.

Also, I believe independent PTO vs live was an option? Does anyone
know?

I once owned a 66 Ford 4000 gasser with Select-O-Speed.

Loved the SOS but hated the tractor. Much preferered my 860 and 64 prior 4000, 4 cylinder SOS.

Nothing inherently wrong with the 66 but the prior 172 CI models would do more mowing work, were more maneuverable and had much lower CG.

The 66 made lots of noise but had no more power than the 172 CIs and the added weight required more HP simply to move around on hills.

If you buy it, inspect for PS leaks and check the carburetor and vacuum advance. The OEM Holley carburetor is economical so long as the vacuum advance is working but many have been replaced with Zenith carburetors which use more gasoline.

The 4000 su or lcg model would follow the 3000 model on the pto option.. where the all purpose and row crop had a independent pto.

pretty much all 3 cylinder 4000 all purpose ag tractors had independent PTO. Other models within the series did not always. The 4400 and 4500 with the manual reversing transmissions only had non-live PTO available. The 4x4 auto reversing models had no PTO option at all. Other variants, like the SU, LCG and Woods models had live or non-live only, except for those with S-O-S transmissions, which all had independent PT.

From 1965 sales literature.

Most 3 cylinder 4000's have independent PTO. So far I've come across ONE 3 cylinder 4000 with transmission pto.

SU's had independent pto, at least as an option. My 1973 sales literature lists it as ONLY available with independent pto.

I stand corrected. The SU's had the double reduction rear axle with inboard wet brakes, so they had independent PTO. It is that rear axle that allows the hydraulic pump to be mounted inside the center housing instead of the side of the engine, and the ones in the center housing had the second pump section for the independent PTO.
