860 parking brake - how does it fit?

Bought a parking brake lever for my 860, but cannot see how, or exactly where it fits. It's only 3 long and is a locking device. Your help appreciated!

David - here is a picture of the right side of my 860. I see your doo-hicky. As far as how it works I have no clue. Never tried to set it on my tractor

The handle is held onto that shaft by a roll pin. If the shaft is free (big if!), the handle turns the shaft to engage the teeth at the other end of the shaft when you step on the brake pedal, holding the pedal down.

I'm a geezer with limited memory, but I own a 640 and a 960 Ford tractor that have about the same setup. Unfortunately, the tractors are about 100 miles away so I can't go out and look at them now.

The schematic shows your lever as part #39 in the small box on the lower right hand side. I believe that this is the picture that Jeff Hamilton has in his reply. To operate the parking brake you depress the brake petal(s), then move the lever to engage the pawls. This prevents the brake petal from retracting and releasing the brake. As you might imagine, it is somewhat awkward for a large old man sitting on the tractor seat to engage or release the parking brake.

Most Ford tractors of that era that I have seen do not use the part you have. They have remote levers behind and to each side of the seat which engage and release the pawls. The schematic shows this setup in the small box on the middle left hand side. Note that this schematic also identifies a lever as part # 39. This setup makes it easier to engage and release the parking braked from a seated position FROM AN ORIGINAL SEAT. I needed to raise my original seat and move it rearward to gain sufficient leg room. The new seat location made it rather awkward to reach the remote brake handles

Another post from 2020 shows this remote setup. https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=1439247

To the best of my knowledge, those extended handles for setting the brake showed up on the x01 series. The NAA's and hundred series (maybe the 8N, too?) used the handle as shown.
You're right, they arent handy to reach.

Agreed.

Brake locks behind the seat were introduced with the 01 series. The flip-over lock in the OP's photo is correct the the hundred series.

As stated below, the lock operates by contacting the roll pin to turn the cam so as to lock/unlock the brakes. The shaft must turn freely in order for the lock to work.

I actually like the early design better than the design used on the 01 series.
