861D fuel tank

I had my diesel fuel tank off to install a new shut off valve and I also removed the fuel return fitting that is on the forward
end of the tank. My understanding is that there is supposed to be a standpipe attached to this fitting. Mine had no pipe. Is
this really necessary? I have some tube I could solder in required. Huw tall should the pipe be?

The pipe should go up almost to the top of the tank so that there is no fuel above it when the tank is almost full. You want there to be no fluid pressure on it so that the return line has no resistance. The return flow is not very high volume or pressure, but if it is restricted then the injection pump and injectors cannot do their work properly.

The tube in my tank had come out of the fitting. I think that to repair it I used some small diam. copper tubing. I remember that I drilled the fitting out a little larger and epoxied the tube in place. That had to be ten years ago and I use the tractor regularly.
