Ford white 588

New User
Hello and good morning.

I have an older Ford White which all of a sudden started slowing down in gear.

Double checked the oil/transmission and noticed it was low.

I filled it back up and noticed I had to drive it back and forth in each gear in which it s a (4) speed manual (forward/reverse).

It slowly started to pick up speed in all gears so I parked it.

I went to use it the other day and it was slow to move in first gear and would not work in any other gear.

I was able to back up in first gear but then it just stop and won t move anymore.

When I put it in gear how ever the tires jerk like they want to move but do not.

Please any suggestions are great let appreciated.
Thank you.

UPON SEARCHING-I think I have an OLIVER 550
PLEASE MOVE thread to Oliver.

What exactly is a Ford White 588? It sounds like it's got a torque converter power reversing transmission. If that's the transmission that it has, then it sounds like something's wrong with the hydraulics or the clutch packs. That transmission has its own hydraulic pump inside the front of the transmission that controls the forward/reverse clutch packs. Low hydraulic pressure could cause those symptoms, and the low pressure could be the pump itself or a leak at one of the connections for the internal lines. It could also be the clutch packs themselves are worn or leaking past the pistons that control them.

(quoted from post at 12:19:50 10/28/22) I would upload some pictures but they just sit stagnant in the upload area.

You say that it is a 4 speed manual transmission, but it sounds like it has a separate control for forward and reverse, so it has 4 forward and 4 reverse speeds, is that correct?

The guys over on the Oliver board will be happy to help. You will need to repost this over there. Good luck.

Not always, but in many cases new users have to have 5 or more posts on record before the site lets them post pictures (or links), due to site spam filters. Another option is to go down to the Site Comments Forum and ask YT Support for permission to post prior to that. You can try going down to the Test Forum and making several posts there to get your post count up, trying to attach your pictures to each post. That may work after you make several posts. Then make your post here again. It may not work immediately after you get past the 5 posts, if not, you might try logging out and back in at that point. There is a size limit as well, I think it is a total of 7mb per post (be it one picture or the total of several). Some pictures (often taken with phones) are too large and have to be reduced before they will post.

Your absolutely correct.

If it is based on a Ford tractor, and it has that type of transmission, it is the torque converter auto reversing transmission, and what I said previously applies.
