Neighbor's 3000 SOS update

Pretty sure I posted a while back (2-3
months, maybe) about my neighbor's 3000
that stripped the TLC hub and input shaft
splines.
He called today, wanting advice... there's
a brass (?) washer a few inches inside
that has dropped down, and won't let the
replacement shaft slide all the way in to
place. That's the thrust washer isn't it?
I'm SURE I mentioned it to him, and told
him to have the transmission vertical.
Too late now. What's his next step? He
says he'd have to move stuff and then move
the rear half of the tractor outside to
swing it up. If he did that, could the
washer be maneuvered into place and the
shaft installed? Or is he looking at a
teardown?

He could tip it up and then push the washer back into place. Alternatively, he could take a stick or long screwdriver and slather some heavy grease on it, stick it in there and try to get the washer to catch some of the grease to stay put. A third option is to pull the steering box off, and have someone lift the washer up while someone else pinches the planetary members together.
