641 Transmission Oil Hydraulic Fluid

Getting Dads old 641 up and running. Checked
transmission oil. 3 inches over filled. Drained a bit out of
the bottom No water. Looks more like hydraulic fluid
that gear oil. Checked hydraulic fluid. A bit low, but not
much. Has anyone seen the hydraulic oil get transferred
to the 4 speed transmission? I drained the transmission
down to the correct level. I guess I will just closely watch
both levels for a bit.

The most common way this happens is the hydraulic pressure line that runs through the transmission developed a leak perhaps due to rust-through. Try searching the archives for additional information and ideas on replacing.

Ok Just to close the loop, for future reference.

I searched the archives for a source of this issue. Pointed me to a hole in the pressure hydraulic tube that passes through the bottom of the transmission (and clutch housing). It also shows a method to repair without splitting the tractor.

Bought all required parts. Drained transmission As thought, hydraulic fluid came out. Next drained hydraulic system Gear oil came out! What?

Im thinking my dad, in his later years, might have drained and refilled the two systems, but mixed up which fluid went where.

Refilled both systems with universal transmission hydraulic fluid that meets the Ford spec. Ill keep an eye on fluid levels to see if all is well.
