Ok, got the tranny worked out guys, Now the tractor will not start without a shot of starter fluid, and ideas> runs great once it starts, of course this is a 1971 ford 30000 3 cyl gas. t hanks

It could be low compression, or carburetor needs to be rebuilt. Either one being borderline will make it hard to start but OK to run once started.

These old engines need a very rich mixture to start when cold. Is your choke closing fully?
