Gas 3.3L doesn't like to hold above 1600rpm

531 gas tractor. Tach says 540 on the pto happens at 1800rpm but the carb doesn't like to hold past 1600. The throttle feels kind of stiff as you get that high and it will throttle back down to 1600 when you let go of the throttle lever.

Is it a spring fighting against me or is there something in the carb that would throttle it back down?

A 531 didn't come from the factory with a PTO, so why are you worried about PTO speed on it? :D

But seriously, it sounds like something wrong with the governor or governor linkage. If you don't have a service manual, get one. Full procedures for servicing the governor and governor linkage are covered in the service manual.

Mine has a PTO. And I'll check that manual. I've got the 3600 manual on CD that's pretty extensive, just have to find it.

As you advance the throttle it is pulling increasingly hard on the governor spring, that's the way things work, it has NOTHING to do with the carburetor.

There's a spring and friction disk setup below the throttle lever that SHOULD hold the lever where you put it, ASSUMING those parts are intact and functioning properly.

Sorry, wrong 531. I thought you were talking about the model in the 501 offset series made from 1959-1962. Yours is the LCG model of the 4600 series.

Just an aside, but those LCG's are GREAT! Mine is the earlier 2110, but is the easiest driving, best power steering, easiest mounting (old knees!), handiest tractor I have ever driven w/it's foot throttle & diffy lock! I also have an early 4 cyl 4000LCG that is just simply FUN to work with!

Does it have a foot throttle, I've had issues with the foot throttle return spring on some of the older models, the hand throttle will give pretty stiff near full throttle and the foot pedal spring wants to plug it back.
Tightening up the nut on the bottom of the throttle levers shaft to increase friction disc pressure will well prevent the throttle from backing off but the lever will be harder to move
