Ford 1900 Engine Head Rebuild? Shibaura Diesel. smoking?

Hi. I have a Ford 1900 1983 that has the Shibaura 3 cyl diesel engine. It started to use quite a bit of oil (and is smoky etc) I suspect it has an issue with the Valves. Engine sounds good but it will use two quarts in about 1 hour of brush hogging! I was hoping to find a video on head rebuild as I am not sure how hard it would be be, I am in Oklahoma (Tulsa area). anyone know of a shop that could rebuild the head or a video. I will check the compression as soon as my compression test kit arrives. I would be very grateful for some help and thoughts on the oil burning and any other thoughts on things I can check. Thank you so much Jon

If you are using that much oil, you have got more problems than a head. Get ready for a complete rebuild. I just did a Shibura 4 cylinder and it had stuck rings, broken rings and the head was OK as far as valve stems and guides. We did a valve job and completely rebuilt the bottom end.

Thanks for thoughts. I will bring it home today and remove the head, actually. I think its the head gasket! Noticed whiteness in the radiator (almost a foam) Once we get the head off we will have a better idea,

I am no expert on Diesel engines though I have done some gas engines! so I am hoping this is fairly straightforward - hoping :)

I don't see how a head gasket could cause oil consumption of 2 quarts per hour. I'm with Weldingman on this.

Hi. Thanks. Just thought I would let you know I ran compression check today and got 390, 250 (!!) and 400. so I guess the 400 might be OK

I guess I am aligned and suspect this is piston ring related.

I have yet to remove the head etc

Anyway- Thanks so much for the help and advice

It doesn't seem really complex to get into the engine ..... - I Am guessing its all doable with a service manual! Any thoughts on how difficult it will be to rebuild?

Thanks all. Jon

Do not throw the old head gasket away, unless you have the tools to check piston protrusion. There are different thicknesses of head
gaskets for the Shibaura's. You need to put back the same thickness as what you took off, unless you change pistons, then protrusion
will have to be checked. Valve adjustment is critical too. These little fellows can be finnicky.
