Not the ideal tractor...

I went up to the property Monday morning and used this tractor to put in my deer plots. Came home last night. It ran real nice but after climbing on and off it a couple dozen times I'm thinking it will mostly sit in the garage up there and get used for shows and parades or maybe a bit of bush hogging.
Had fun tho.
If you look in the background you can see my deer blind.

Looks good. You said "not the ideal tractor" and I would agree it's alittle big for your needs. Looks good tho.

That is some nice looking deer hunting property. And from what I can see the deer blind/small house looks pretty nice also. Have you been making food plots long? Does a disc work better or faster than a tiller? I'm looking for something for my IH424 to make food plots and wondering what might work better.

Ultra will reply but keep in mind you won't be happy with a tiller. Your tractor does not have slow enough ground speed for it and they don't dig in as deep as they look. My favorite tool is a cultivator run deep, like a mini chisel plow.

I use a 6 foot tiller behind my 1520 or 301 JD, both have a slow first gear and it does a great job, broadcast the seed and drag it in.

Nice looking ground and tractor.

Friend recently planted two acres of corn for a deer plot.

Crows pulled up small plants to eat the seeds, leaving remnants of small corn plants on ground.

He told me that they got almost all of the corn.

Looking for something else to plant now.

Dennis,
I started with a Ford 2N so a plow and disc were about the only option.
Just stuck with that method - little bigger tractor, little bigger plow. Then a little bigger tractor, little bigger disc and so on.
This tractor would run a tiller but with as many rocks as we have I think you would destroy a tiller here. My plow is 2-16in. This tractor would likely pull more but then again I tripped a bottom - twice on Monday and had to go to town to get some spare shear bolts.
I plow, then disc, then broadcast the seed with an antique hand crank spreader.
Then I pull an old bed spring behind my bro's 4 wheeler around and finally pull an 8' cultipacker over it.
Central MN in Not known for big deer or an abundance of deer. We have real wolves and real winters there.
So planting something for them really helps to draw them in.
Last year we had a severe drought and nothing grew and I saw only 1 deer - opening morning.
Decided not to shoot and came home after 3 weekends empty handed.
This is about my 15th year of doing plots.
Had some real good years and some real bad years. Like any 'farmer' I guess.
But it is fun for this city guy to do a little tractoring and of course, hope springs eternal as they say.

Thanks for the input. I do have a tiller I can borrow to see if 1st gear in LOW would be slow enough to work with a tiller. According to Tractor Data it should go about 1.5 in 1st and LOW.

I pull a 7 ft tiller with my 4000, it does 1.3 mph in 1st low and does a decent job, for a well worked garden Ill go over it 2-3 times
Your 1.5 is equal to my 2nd, for working up a field for grass Ive ran in 3rd

I know what you are saying about getting on and off that tractor a bunch of times!! I have a 5200 and it's fine when you're on it but after using the all purpose versions most all my life I've gotten spoiled with only one step and you're on it!! Looking good tho!

That was my Grandpa's complaint against the 7200 he briefly owned... getting on and off... plus cold feet when the wind would blow under the deck in the late fall and winter.
Good that you got it seeded, since I'd assume you got rain yesterday or last night. I was able to get back to plowing yesterday, but it was raining this morning.

I built this 2 years ago.
Yeah, it is a bit over the top.
Has 110v power to it - for the heater, coffee pot, microwave and phone charger.
It sits out in a promontory about 14' up.
Made it at home and hauled it up on the trailer.
Had a different, smaller one there for about 8 years but sold it and built this one.
After 45 years of sitting in a cold tree I finally wised up.

Do you have room service in your blind, UD?

Just kidding of course, but you might want to put in for valet service for your Range Rover....

Wow! I think I would never want to leave the woods! I had the whole family come check out your photos. Thomas says that you could rent that out during the non-hunting season. Smart 8 year old :)
