Ford Powermaster 871 SOS Issue

I am currently restoring a 1961 Ford Powermaster 871 Select-O-Speed tractor; Serial# 142943. It belonged to my father who had been converting it from a 6 volt to a 12 volt system before he passed away a few years ago. With some additional changes the conversion is complete, and the tractor is sitting on blocks. The issue now is, whenever the engine is running and the shift lever is in Park, the wheels are moving slowly. Whenever the shift lever is moved to Neutral, the engine stalls when the inching pedal is released. Is this an indication that the shift lever cables or linkages are misaligned? I don't remember my father having any problems with the transmission and don't think he would have changed anything in the selector.

Before doing anything else, disconnect the traction disconnect to avoid potential injury.

Then adjust the shifter cable and bands per the proper Ford shop manual.

Since it is on blocks, I don't think the traction disconnect is a necessary precaution, but I guess there is never such a thing as "too safe".

It is perfectly normal for SOS tractors to creep before the transmission gets warmed up. As Dean posted you need a shop manual, but I think that you will be able to correct the stalling in neutral by adjusting the first band.

(quoted from post at 05:58:17 05/17/22) Sounds like a shifter cables out of adjustment tractor should not stall in neutral

Maybe it shouldn't but mine did when I was adjusting the bands two years ago. I got #1 just a tiny bit too tight so that it would start but in about ten seconds the motor would pull down and stall.

Thank you for the feedback. Yes, the tractor is on blocks, but the wheel(s) can turn pretty fast when the engine runs for several minutes. I will disconnect the transmission and proceed with adjusting the cable and bands. I have a copy of the Ford Tractor Shop Manual SE 8175-S1 Supplement, which includes maintenance and adjustment procedures for the 4000 direct drive clutch models. Much thanks for your help

Thanks for the tip.
