Ford Elenco Value

Hello, I have found an elenco conversion kit for a ford tractor for sale near me. I'm going to look at it later. What do I need to look at as far as possible weak spots, and what would someone expect to pay for a complete unit. Thanks, Dan

The price was 2k to 6k depending on condition, before everything went crazy. Things for consideration; is the kit for a SOS or manual transmission, is it the early or later kit, is it for an industrial or AG tractor. Unless its NOS or been rebuild, expect wear. Transfer cases are almost non existing.

How can I tell if it's for a SOS or manual trans. I was told it's currently not on a tractor. Also, what's the differences for early and later models. Thanks, Dan

Search on Tony Jacob, he owns the company and layout the differences very well. But since you need the information now here are the cliff notes. Difference spline count between the SOS and manual(where the chain goes). Early ones have a torque limiter on the drive shaft up by the front axle, and a bolt on front axle cover. Little later the cover on the front axle is welded on and the later ones had Elenco forge into the cover. The later ones also were able to disconnect 4 wheel drive.

you need the sprocket, triple chain, 90 degree gear box, driveshaft, modified radius rods and brackets, and the axle. If it is an earlier model, it will have a
torque-limiter clutch pack on the axle pinion yoke end of the driveshaft. If it is a later model, that clutch pack is incorporated into the rear of the gearbox
and has a hex nut on the backside of the box that you can turn to release the internal disks, taking it out of drive. Earlier models lack that handy feature and
are full-time 4X4 (unless you fit lock-out hubs to the axle).

Spin the axle by hand and listen to the ring and pinion gears. They get destroyed by not sizing the tires correctly, which is very common!. Listen for grinding
and feel for binding or skipping as you turn them over. A new set of 4.89:1 gears (Dodge WC or Power Wagon) will set you back 600.oo, not including having them
set up correctly to run true. Everything to rebuild that axle can be bought from Vintage Power Wagons. Check those split rims over carefully too- they can get
ruined if left sitting in dirt for decades.

The torque limiter/ slip clutch can be worn out or damaged too, but unless it is obviously broken into pieces, you'll never know until you try and use it! I
think Tony Jacobs rebuilds those (???).

In addition to everything that warbaby mentioned, there is also an internal brace used inside of the 90 degree gearbox transfer case, and the pto shifter handle is relocated to clear the Elenco triple chain to drive the gearbox. The difference between an Elenco for a four speed, five speed, and SOS may only be in the number of teeth on the drive sprocket and the driven sprocket. Tony Jacobs will have the answers definitively. Hopefully whoever removed the Elenco did a thorough job and removed it all, not just the visible external components.
