68 5000 8 speed neutral safety switch help

Safety switch was jumped out, so I ordered a new one and as I was afraid of, when I pulled the shift plate, to my surprise, not only was there no safety switch, there was no safety switch holder either. Anything to do with the safety switch was gone. So I got a used holder and screwed the safety switch into the holder and pushed onto the shaft. But looking at it, it seems like the ball on the safety switch does not come close to touching the shaft, It is a good 1/2 inch away, so it appears as if the ball on the safety switch will never get depressed. There are detents on the shaft, so I expected that the ball should ride on the shaft and go in and out based on the shaft detents.
Anyway, I don't see how this will work and cant find any documentation showing how it should go together. The New Holland parts diagram shows a spring, ball and plunger that goes into the holder but I am not sure that what they are showing is integral to the safety switch or external to the switch.
Any help as to how this should go together would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Alan

Have you recently got this tractor and the safety switch didn't work?
The holder in my parts book shows it on the hi/low shift rail, no way it can just fall off.

Yes, it is my NEW 68 5000 and when I went to look at it, thankfully I didn't try to start it in gear as I know better. When I got it home I started going over everything in detail and found the safety switched was jumped out under the dash. SO I got a new switch, figuring it was a quick 5 minute job (yeah right ), pulled the cover, only to find everything gone. I haven't drained it yet and I am wondering if everything is sitting at the bottom. So I got the right safety switch and the right holder ( the part# is stamped right on it), and it just seems like something is not right. The ball of the switch definitely does not touch the shaft when I slide it on, and I don't see anything on the shaft that will move up to activate the ball on the switch. Like I said in the post I see in the parts diagram they call out for the switch and then they show 3 other parts: a spring, ball and plunger and I cant figure out if that is internal to the switch or external and somehow to put them in between the ball in the switch and the shaft. Since I haven't seen what it should look like, and I don't have those 3 parts they call out for, I can't figure out how to make this work.
There is one thing that bothers me though, there are apparently several part#'s for the holder and the holder that I have does not have a key slot in it, and my shaft does not have a key slot cut in it, but some of the holders that I have seen do have a a key slot cut into them. So I am thinking maybe the other holder would work, even though the part #s seem to be interchangeable. It is one of those things that I don't know what I don't know !
Thanks

My book only shows one retainer for the safety switch
C5NN 11N002A that was replaced by E1NN 11N002AA
You do need the spring, ball and plunger along with #73 pin if it didn't come with the retainer

Yes I went ahead and ordered those parts, as my holder did not come with them. I do see in the parts diagram that there is a pin at the end of the rail but it is not listed as a part. You mention a #73 pin can you kindly explain what that is and how did you find out what that was.
Thanks
Alan

Pin # 73 goes in the top of the retainer and aligns with a notch in the top cover, this keeps the retainer in place and keeps it from falling off the rail

The pin in the rail I believe lines up with the slot in the retainer to hold it upright until the shift cover is in place, otherwise the retainer would lean over and making it difficult to align the pin in the top cover

Thanks..yes I have that #73 is attached to the cover plate. I was thinking you were talking about that small pin at the end of the rail. There is no number for it and not sure what it does. Prevents the retainer from falling off when you pull the cover ? Or allows you to position the retainer up against it ? Not sure it is even really needed.
Thanks again...Alan

Sounds like a similar problem I had on a 5610. The spring, plunger and ball all work together. The parts you are missing are in the bottom of the transmission. I attached a magnet to a rubber hose and snaked it down along the inside of the transmission and under all the gears and shafts. Did not find the parts. Bern suggested taking the plug out on the bottom near the rear of the transmission. Drained about 2 gallons of oil and the parts came out the plug hole. Good luck.

I ordered those 3 parts and when they came in it took me awhile to figure out how they go in. I felt under the rail and sure enough there was a detent where the ball would go. Got it figured out how it should go but then spent a little more time trying to figure out how to put the ball and spring in with out dropping them in the tank. Tried a couple of ways away from the tractor and had the ball and fly out, but I was smart enough to do it in a wide open space so I can find them when they "sprung". Anyway, got them in and got it working, then drained the tank and sure enough the ball was down there. I now understand why he did just jumped the switch out.
