3000 diesel runs rough

Working on a 3000 diesel for a friend. Started as a blown head gasket. While working on the gasket replacement they took the injectors to a diesel shop to have them checked. Shop said they were fine. Engine started a little hard in cool weather but not too bad. Still ran very rough at higher rpms. Tried timing changes and it made no difference. Had pump rebuilt. No change. Overhauled engine as compression was borderline bad. No change. Replaced injectors, no change. I will try to attach a video to see if any one has any ideas as to what this issue is.

Plugged air cleaner would be my guess. Try running it with the intake hose disconnected from the manifold and see if your problem goes away.

Bern, did you ever come across flutter on the early 3 cylinder tractors? We got a lot of complaints about those engines missing at high revs and Ford did a campaign change where we fitted anti-flutter valves in place of the banjo bolts where the lines leave the pump.

Think it could have something to do with the rotary pump as, with the same designed pump on the Perkins 6.354, 4.270 and 4.236 engines in the Claas combines, it was called IEB, Irregular Exhaust Beat. Claas were sprayed blue and white at one time and badged Ford, it was strange to see them coming down the production line in Harsewinkel.

The IEB can also be caused by the advance housing plugs, CAV asked us to replace those on some Perkins DPA pumps on a fix as fail basis if needed. CAV also found on Ford and Perkins 3 cylinder pumps the blade rotor could cause IEB, and select fitting a different rotor would correct the problem if the original rotor has a blade slot in line with the rotor port. I still see pumps in for repair that need the rotor changed at times.

Yep, I've heard it many times, however most customers don't complain about it because it only does it under no load. It certainly wouldn't bother me, as I typically don't start my engine and just let it sit there at high idle.
