When did they start coming out without solid front ends my 740 is solid

Are you talking about the one piece pedestal? They used those when the 700 and 900 were first released, up through 1956. According to the parts drawings, they switched to the two piece pedestal on 1/1/67.

Yeah, I think that the parts site has been listing start dates for the production of parts for a new model year as 1/1 of the new model year instead of the date that they went into production, which was usually a few months prior to 1/1.
