64 gas 4000 backhoe weak

This is my first backhoe, I believe it to be a 723. I have run mini excavators before and I feel like my backhoe is weak. I tried it out digging for the first time and it cant even scoop a bucket of dirt, but seems to operate fully. I have full control of swing, dipper and bucket. When i put the teeth in, I cant even curl the bucket or pull it. I am still getting used to the separate controls, but was wondering if this is normal and im doing it wrong or if the hydraulics are weak. I do have a spin on filter under the right side frame I am going to try replacing.

The front end seems like it has plenty of power, I am able to lift a bucket of dirt, though I havent tried to lift anything else.

You should be able to take a pretty good cut without problems. Below is a
picture of my 713 (predessesor to the 723 but very similar) lifting a large chunk
of concrete. You can put a pressure gauge on the port on the side of the control
tower and see what's going on. System relief should be around 2000 psi. Are you
reaching this pressure? If not maybe worn pump. There is also circuit relief on
most circuits. Also check the standard stuff, oil level, restrictions etc.

Thats what I kind of figured. The backhoe will lift the rear of the machine about 6 inches off the ground and thats it. I am going to try a new filter and check the fluid level after that. My neighbor is also nice enough to let me borrow a gauge set if I need to.

Is this a 723 backhoe and 724 loader? I want to get the correct books

That's probably a 712 loader. Scour the
loader and the backhoe for metal data
plates. Both will have a 19-XXX number
that will give you a positive ID. Also
get the tractor's ID numbers from the flat
spot on the transmission's bell housing
where the starter bolts in. Post the
numbers you find if you want decoded.

The 713 and 723 are similar enough that
they share a parts manual.

Most likely your backhoe is a 723.

I appreciate your help with everything

I looked all over both the loader and the backhoe, I cant find a tag or anything.

Where are they usually at?

Well not really sure, sometimes they are
missing, sometimes painted over etc. On
my 713 definitely missing. I think it's
safe to go with 4140 heavy industrial
tractor, 712 loader, and 723 backhoe.

Thank you! I have my books on order. I hope I can still find the parts If I need them. Im thinking my pump is shot or relief is just not working right. The engine will bog down but still little to no power from the hoe when digging.

I have some troubleshooting to do when the books get here, including putting a gauge on. I should be around 2000 psi I believe
