SOS questions

I finally got my 64 4000 running and able to move, but Id like to get the sos back to original use. Ill attach a picture of whats there now, but one of my questions is that I dont think I have a pto cable. I have the ford backhoe on, and dont have a pto shaft sticking out the back. Does that mean I dont need to worry about the pto connection to the top plate?

I have a selector with a working cable and conduit, but I dont think I have a lower cable unless its pulled inside the transmission. I have not taken the top cover off yet to look inside.

Correct. If you don't have a PTO shaft sticking out the back of the tractor, or never use a PTO, you have no need for a PTO shift cable. If your transmission has a PTO clutch inside of it (and I suspect there is, as I'm not aware of a PTO delete option for the trans), it's just sitting in there spinning away, not harming anything.

That's an unusual P-10 shifting arrangement you currently have on there now. I'm guessing you plan to retire that option and revert back to the original shifter?

Yes that is correct, though that does work surprisingly well other than quick shifting back from reverse to drive

I wonder if that arrangement could be improved and do away with the cable, Seems to me that a quadrant could be added and a short lever, much like the hydraulic lift control. Just musing.

I have seen a SOS tractor with a lever mounted to the left side of the top cover for shifting.

It was crude but functional.

Fabricating a less crude mechanism with indicator would be a good project for some enterprising individual.

I'm sure you could, but why? I'm of the opinion that the cable setup works just fine. The biggest problem with the cable arrangement is finding a good used one if it breaks.

The cable selector does work fine but many have worn out or are doing so and replacement parts are difficult to find and expensive.

I have to say it works decently, but you do need to use the inching pedal like a clutch because you cant rotate the ratchet from forward to reverse quickly. Its kind of ingenious, but fluid does like to pour out of it too in the higher gears. Also whoever welded it was a great welder. I think Ill remove it because it is a loader and being able to switch from forward to reverse is what I mainly need. Ill keep the set up though. I do wonder if the lower cable is still attached in there

That is an idea I've had ever since I drove a 971 around the parking lot with no cover on the transmission to test it.
I shifted it with a big screwdriver.
Worked fine.
Make an angled puck and weld or silver solder it to the cover. Locate the height off the transmission case and the fore/aft off the bolt holes and bore it in a mill. A guy could even put an Oring or oil seal in there to keep the crud out if he wanted.
Would be a fun little project.
