Ford 3000 CAV pump

I am just about ready to try and start my 3000 diesel after engine and crankshaft replacement.
The fuel system leaves me with a couple questions. 1) Can I just supply fuel to filter and collect the excess off of injector
return lines to just get the engine running hopefully? 2)There is a flexible line off of the top front of pump and I can't
remember where it goes I plugged it off during disassembly? 3)The intake manifold has a fitting for a line and wire I can't
remember what was there either? If I was 30 years younger I would have taken several more pictures. A plumbing diagram would
help quite a bit.

The line and plug on the intake is for the heater. The flexible line on the back of the pump runs up to the flexible line that ties all 3 injector together.

This assumes you have the 3cyl diesel.

There is a bleeding process where you start at the filter housing then bleed the pump with the 5/16 screw next to the head and finally crack the lines at the injectors and crank until you get fuel. I have tried that a few times and found it faster to just pull start them. Your starter will thank you.

I can try and get you pics of line locations when I get home tonight if that helps. Currently waiting on an auction to start so it will be late.

Hi all your input has been helpful and I m back at it. I towed it and it started wow. It has a CAV pump and everything I ve read says set it on zero and that should be it but it runs a bit rough with what I think is too much white smoke. I can t determine if it s skipping or not how can you tell with no spark plug wires to pull off? Should timing be moved a bit if so can the pump be rolled while running to change timing?

I don't think it hurts anything to move the pump a bit while it is running but I don't know if you can.
Went through that a month ago on my pal Kenny's 4600.
It has a noise in it and I thought I would tweak the timing to see if that did anything.
Those injector lines are pretty stiff. A far cry from spark plug wires if you are trying to tweak the distributer on a gasser.
Even grabbing the pump with both hands I couldn't move it to the next line on the marks - and also hold it there to get a bolt tight.
If you loosen the lines at the injectors then set the pump and you can move it but it won't run then. I would be interested in knowing how they do it when they have it on a dyno.

It would probably make you sick. I remember the dyno and the boiling water draining into the wash rack, but I don't remember anyone adjusting a pump. Just when you thought $100/hr was paying for real talent, you'd see someone with a 36" pipe wrench and a BFH.
