PTO Seal Leaking

I have a 1958 Ford 941 tractor. I have several questions, i replaced the fluid in the tranny and rear axle last year, can i elevate the
rear end and just remove the PTO with minimum fluid loss? Do i need to have the PTO engaged when i remove the PTO to keep anything from
getting out of alignment? Will the PTO just pull out or do i need a come along for help? Do i need to also replace the bearings on the
PTO when its out?

Thanks for any info

PTO shaft is in 2 compartments,r/a and hyd so just as well drain both. Doesnt need to be engaged. I have seen very few bearing worn out

I changed mine some years back by just backing the back end up 20 inches higher than the front end. It pulled out easily, no need for it to be in gear. IIRC I had to just wiggle the back end around a little to get it to go all the way in.

That can be done but hyd is going to be overfull and rear axle is going to be low when get it back level. Not common sump like a N.

Shaun, I don't deny that oil can get from the differential into the hydro housing and into the transmission. However, the pathway is only through the bearings that are mounted in the bulkheads. The flow is very slow. I admit that when I did it I made a point of doing it fairly quickly, but afterwards I could detect no oil movement.

In case you haven't gotten it taken care of yet, I'll offer this. Just drain the Differential. When after draining all my fluids on my 53 Jubilee and pulled the PTO to check (Leather seal and rough spin bearing) I was amazed at the amount of cement lik sludge in the Diff. Nearly one inch thick. Made a few scraping tools and could fit my hand into the back of the PTO hole and a light to see. Lots to clean out but got most of it. Changing the seal and bearing was pretty straight forward and PTO engaged when removed.
