4000 SU PTO shaft

After a long delay, I've been working on this '73 4000SU. Actually runs real nice, without any real work on the engine itself, just had the injector pump and injectors rebuilt. (Pump was in bad shape after having been left with water in it)
Now I have to put a new PTO shaft in it. I think you can see the thrust washer that has dropped down. Service manual says a rear split is in order, but I seem to remember reading about a trick to avoid that. Use a broom handle with grease to push it back into position, and stick it there. Is that right?

There is a YouTube video on the broom stick method, I bought a IT manual and there was no warning. Looking at the same job next month.

I had good luck with a 1/4 inch diameter concrete rebar, with a small/tiny flash light taped to it, and a huge blob of axle grease on the end.. May take a couple of tries but if you can see what your doing, its actually not too bad to blob it up in place. Thus rebar worked better than broom stick for me.. but then thats me. Then when installing the pto shaft, felt a bit of resistance so I was able to spin the shaft and set it.

Thanks.
After a couple tries without enough grease to make it stay, I got it. Hopefully I'll have pictures of a fully resembled and operating 4000SU to share soon.
