861D Fuel in Oil

Had a problem for the last few months of my 861 making oil. It was obvious diesel was leaking internally somewhere. I replaced the umbrella seals on the shaft but did not help. last week I pulled the valve cover and found the problem. One of the banjo bolts that holds the leak off line to the injectors had broken off right at the bolt head allowing the banjo fitting to leak. Replaced all the bolts with new ones with new crush seals top and bottom. Now a new problem started. The engine would start and run fine but after a minute or so it would start to miss, lose power and then slowly die regardless of throttle position. Looking at every part of the fuel system all I could see was that the leak off line had a severe kink in it. I loosened the fitting for this line that is on the side of the head, started the engine, saw a slow dribble of fuel from the fitting but the engine ran steadily for several minutes (messy but it ran fine). My question is how much pressure is on that line and if it is blocked can it interfere with the injectors popping off? Previously the pressure was being relieved by the internal leak. Is there enough pressure to break one of those banjo bolts? Will a new leak off line take care of this?

Try running engine again, and just as it slows down to die quickly loosen the two screw timing cover on the pump side. If engine speeds up/runs OK WITH the cover fuel leak, but dies with the cover tight the injection pump MAY have the retainer ring breaking apart inside and bits plugging the return side of the pump. Blocking the Stanadyne/Roosa pump return WILL shut the pump down. There should be no pressure in the injector return line side, as correctly working injectors have very little leak off fuel back to the tank.

I replaced the return line and ran the tractor. All good, was able to brush hog for about 30 minutes before dark with no problem.
