3000 ford wont start without ether

Try to start without ether and gas starts running out the
bottom of Holley carb. Start with ether and then it will run
until you shut it off but will not restart.Any ideas where to
start? Gonna be needing to sow down crp in about 2
weeks

I would start with a compression test. If compression is low then it will be hard to start on gas alone, but once started it will likely continue to run. If compression is good then the next thing I would look at is the carb. If it is too lean then again, it will be hard to start, but will likely continue to run once started.

On the updraft carbs... cold gas vapor is heavier than air.. so yes it will fall back down and run out the carb... so..

You must have a choke that closes ALL the way initially to get the heavy vapors up to the engine. Ether is lighter than air and goes where is needed to fuel the engine. Carb jets must be clean to provide enough gas to air ratio. A cold engine need way more gas than normal. hence the choke MUST work well on an updraft engine where the carb is mounted below the engine. Engine needs to pull a good vacuum to get the heavier part of the mixture up hill, other wise all it gets is air, air and air.

Ether can start the engine and run the engine up to speed to compensate for.... slow cranking, weak spark, low compression, lack of choke and a host of other problems by mainly putting lots of vaporized fuel up hill and to the engine... I would start with the carb/choke.... 3000 has a backfire plate on the bottom of the carb that can leak a lot of air and prevent it from pulling a heavy cold mixture up. Make sure the little round gasket is still in good shape and sealing the main chamber correctly so the choke will work. Again, its on the bottom with a spring steel strap over it with a screw on one end of the strap. If the little black gasket ring has fallen out, it will leak air around the choke and air filter for that matter.
