Fordson Super Major

Hi going to change the rear crankshaft rope seal on a fordson major that's been leaking since I bought it. Probably has never been changed since new so in reality will it be possible to get it stopped with a new seal and what's the best way about doing it. Thanks.

You have to drop the sump and split the tractor, remove the clutch and the flywheel as the top part of the seal fits in an aluminium housing held on by three studs behind the flywheel. Soak the replacement halves of the seal in oil before fitting and hammer hard into the grove with a rounded piece of wood. Leave about 1/8 th of an inch protruding on each end of the seal.

I would also check the clutch, thrust bearing and pilot bearing and replace the front gearbox seal(s) whilst I was in there.

Thanks for the info I will check those.
Does the sump gasket cover go inbetween where the rope seals meet? Been looking at the gasket and it looks like it does?

A few years ago there was issues with replacement rope seals being to short as they looked ok once hand pressed in with correct protrusion but once installed would sink in retainer and leave a gap. To check for that do the sump seal first then with sump installed check for for correct protrusion. Then install the upper rope seal and retainer with out sealant on it and then remove it and check protrusion. If all is good reinstall retainer with sealant and should be good for many years with no drips.
