I saw an add for a 1985 550 with backhoe the add states runs well but transmission has no reverse, I assume the power reverser pump, clutches are shot. Any advice on fixing this and the add states they want $8500 is this high or low pictures look like it's in reasonable shape good rear tires. Thanks in advance.

Doesn't sound like a bargain to me. You'll find it's a '75, not '85. If the pump was bad, F and R would respond similarly. The R clutches could be burned, but the edge of the clutch drum could have cracked and lost the snap ring. Could be a linkage problem but you rarely get that lucky. A broken sealing ring is cheap, but she still has to come apart. I suppose the blocker valve could be stuck. If they'll take $5K and you put up to another $5K in her, you'll be ok, but $13K for a 555 that is going to have other things wrong with her is a bit high. You didn't say whether she was an extendahoe or standard hoe. At least with a standard dipper you aren't likely facing an expensive crack.

My Ford service manual says it could be a broken shaft or broken shifter fork. Either problem will require a complete disassembly and tranny rebuild. And this is just the beginning. If it was really cheap it might be worth working on it. I recommend don't buy it and wait for another.

I saw the tractor looks good runs good nearly new rear tires new hoses the shifter lever acts like it hits a stop from neutral it's like it is hitting a stop. Any ideas

So is it a manual shift or power shuttle shift?
Manual shift as in three forward, two reverse plus the hi-lo shift?
In your original post you "assumed" it was a "power reverser" so need more info.

The main valve spool may be hitting the blocker valve. You can get to it without a split. May be the internal linkage. You can get to it without a split. Anything else requires a split. If she's really nice overall and you do the work yourself, maybe you can get in and out of the shuttle for $2,500. The blocker valve and linkage are primarily a labor issue. Not much $$$ in parts.

I've been assuming a hydraulic shuttle given the reference to power and clutches above.

You might need your spectacles to read. Blocker valve from the Ford 550 Service manual

Also note that the service manual specifically states the tractor will not shift unless the RPM is under 1200 and on a cold tractor/transmission it won't shift at any engine speed until warmed up.

Are you talking about a shifter down on top of the transmission, or the F-N-R handle up by the steering wheel? If it is the F-N-R handle, it could be something in the external linkage between the control handle and the actual valve spool.
