901 Transmission stuck??

Hi guys and gals!

Ok, so I have a 901 SoS. Pulled it out if the shed and drove fine for 10 minutes, then it quit. Motor runs but high pitch whine and no gears work. None at all.

PTO isnt spinning either.

Pulled the cover off and this is what I see. Dip stick shows plenty of hydraulic fluid.

Would like to attempt to fix myself if possible but if I have to split it'll have to get trailed to service dept.

Your advice is much appreciated!

There is no dipstick for the transmission, only for the hydraulics which is a separate reservoir. Sounds like you may have stripped out the splines on th input shaft and the torque limiting clutch. Requires a split between engine and transmission and a good service manual or past experience doing the work. Not a real hard job but easy to mess something up that will cost a lot more to fix. Also you can't just pull the input shaft without raising the front of transmission to a vertical position, there is a thrust washer that will fall out otherwise and if that happens you get to disassemble the whole transmission.

Most dealers service won't touch them as so many parts are made of unobtainium! And most of the service personnel that worked on them are retired.

If you are lucky, the torque limiting clutch rivets have failed but more likely the splines on the input shaft have failed due to fretting corrosion. If so, you will need a replacement shaft or try one of the unproven (long-term) repair procedures.

Guys / Gals-

Here are some photos of our tractor. We took off the loader last night. Just has always seemed much to heavy for this tractor. At least to us.

By having the loader removed, should be a little easier (and lighter) to move onto a trailer. We have a service department who loves these older Ford tractors (Walthill Service in Walthill, NE) so I'm believing these fellas can fix as this tractor has been a good to my family and I.

Thoughts?

Appreciate everyone's insight.

I've done business with them in the past, it's been a few years but was always happy afterwards. You are lucky that they are close to you as most places don't want to mess with a SOS anymore. Hopefully they can get you up and running again without it being too painful of a bill!
