I have a 58 861. I rewired it, installed a new solenoid,start
button, and junction block . The push button will not work. Is
there a difference between a tractor solenoid and a car
solenoid. The one I bought came off the shelf of my local auto
parts stop. It is a 3 pole solenoid, thats what it had before. I
dont understand how the push button works. The solenoid I
have will only start the tractor if I put a hot wire to the S pole.
Other than the button it will start and run great. Im attaching a
pic of how I wired it as well. Thanks for the help

A tractor solenoid work by grounding it and a car solenoid work by putting power to it so yes they do not interchange
 
Is this because it came as a 6 volt system?? How can I tell the difference unless I order it online
 
Has nothing to do with being 6 or 12 volts it just the way it was done back then. A good parts store can get you the solenoid you need
 
Thanks guys, that can really mess with a guys head. Ive been conversing around the shop trying to make sense of how it works but wasnt aware that solenoid existed.
 
Yes when it come to electrical things some times it can be mind blowing even if you have the education to understand it

NOT necessarily true, it was more of a FORD thing "back in the day.

Ford cars and trucks of the era used the same style of "ground it to make it start" solenoid.

Not my only mind blowing moment on this wiring job. I wire loomed everything and added the push pin zip tie deals we use on automotive for nice tight clean look. Well the push pin zip ties require a 1/4 hole. So I went about my business drilling holes, drilled my first one into the battery box for the coil wire and pushed that drill bit right on thru into the battery. I learn my lessons the hard way, never thanks again hope you got a laugh out of it
