Question about tread width & row spacing

I bought a Dearborn rigid shank cultivator and its set up for two rows on 40 inch row spacing. Corn and cotton row spacing used to be commonly 40 inches back when these tractors were built. But how should the tread width be set? It would seem 80 inches would be correct, but operators manual says max tread width is 76.

It wouldn't be perfectly centered but 76
inches should work just fine. With that
wide of row spacing and the factory size of
the tires that would still give you a fair
amount of wiggle room I would believe.

Wide spacing should be good enough.

The front wheels are dished out probable for turning clearance with the front mounted cultivator . Ford didn't make a steering box good enough to control those front wheels on a day to day basis .BTDT When this picture popped up I thought someone stool my picture. Have one almost like it with me driving. Wish I knew how to post pictures

Awesome, thank you. I also bought a planter - Im pretty sure its a Kelly Planter Attachment. There is a manual for it on the n-tractorclub manual archives. It is driven by a sprocket that goes on the brake drum. Only the man I got it from didnt have that drive sprocket part any more. He said he had seen other people convert theirs to ground driven by mounting a gauge wheel with sprocket on the frame. Does anybody happen to have a picture of one set up like that?
Thanks!

The tractor in that picture is set way
wider than we ever set ours for
cultivating. We had 38 row spacing back
then, not 40, but still...
To straddle two 40 rows, you really only
need about 48 - 52 between the tires,
depending on how much clearance you want
between the tire and the row. That would
put it around 60 - 64 with 12.4 tires,
when measured at the center of the tire,
or a little over 6' wide overall.

Are you sure you have those numbers right, 48-52 inches between the tires only gives you 4-6 inches between the tires and the plants on a 40 inch row and 5-7 inches on a 38 inch row, I don't like the tires compacting the soil that close to the roots.
60-64 inches between the tires gives you 10-12 inches between the tires and plants on a 40 inch row, with 12.4 tires that gives you a 72-76 inch spread

While we haven't cultivated corn in
years, I did cultivate one year with the
Jubilee and a 2 row; the next year
Grandpa put me on the 4600 with a 4 row.
The Jubilee is 60, center to center on
the tires. 48 between the tires
(12.4's). The 4600 (16.9x30's) is at 64
and has about 47 between the tires.
Maybe not ideal, but it does work. Maybe
you're cultivating older/bigger corn than
I did?

We haven't cultivated corn since the late 70's when we went to no-til, we were doing 36 inch rows then and now do 30 inch rows
But we used the same wheel spacing for corn as we did tobacco and you didn't want the tires breaking off the tobacco leaves, so we set the thread width as close to the center of the rows as possible
On the Ford 850 we had with the wheel and center setting for around 60 inches narrowed up, simply turning the wheels around would get us around a 72 inch setting for cultivating.
