New to me ford 4000 industrial

Hello,

I picked up a 64 4000 industrial for a good price, but needs work. I have a few questions, this is my first ford

It has the selecto speed transmission, but seems to be missing the actual selector. Im not sure if the cable broke or what but the previous owner made a contraption on the side to shift. He used it like that a lot. I am going to try to find the parts to fix it as I imagine its quite annoying to reach down to shift it. He told me there is a park, but it seems to spin.

It needs a new carb, he had it apart and lost something- its the large marvel-schebler carburetor. I think Ive read to just replace it with a new zenith.

Last thing, when sitting in the seat, on the left side, theres something to do with the rear end? He had a pair of vice grips on there to spin the rod. What is that? And what lever is correct?

I have a fo-20 manual, I think Ill look for the factory manual as well.

Thanks!

Just my opinion, I would not replace that M-S carb with a Zenith. Send it to Mo-Tech Engineering and it will be like new when you get it back. They have rebuilt two for me and did a great job both times. Bolt on ready.
Good luck with the SOS. There are guys here that can help.

The knob was installed on the side because the cable broke and they are difficult to find. A friend did that on another friend's Ford, except that he made a much smaller hole in the cover with a grommet and a 3/8 shaft. I would use that shifter. I would spruce it up by installing a bushing with perhaps a groove for an O-ring, and a new handle and whatever else it needs to tighten it up. YOU NEED TO KEEP THAT TRANSMISSION CLEAN!!! Change the oil immediately!! Use UTF.

Your comment about "park, and "seems to spin" I think may mean that the knob will turn around and around without coming up against a stop, and that the tractor will creep instead of going into park. My friend welded a piece of rod to the end of the shaft so that the handle is a "TEE". this makes it possible to tell what gear you are in. The transmission has a park, but it takes a while for it to go in until the oil gets hot.

This is good info so far, thank you. I havent had it running yet so Im not sure what to expect from the trans. He said he rebuilt it with someone who knew them but I take that with a grain of salt.

As far as the carb, doesnt everyone recommend the new zenith?

I don't

Well thats good, it saves me a couple hundred dollars.

The previous owner told me there is a "transport" pin or clip that is supposed to be on the float that isn't there. I have yet to open the carb up to look in it, I had figured it was something to just replace from reading on here.

I can order a comprehensive kit from here, I'm ordering some other parts already. Maybe it is worth sending it in for a rebuild instead too

UTF ??? - just a reminder to the original poster, (I'm sure you know) wrong fluid will mean the end of that transmission. Needs
to meet the Ford spec, and the label should state same. If it's even in question best to not use it. I had a '64 4000 S-O-S
for several years, put some hours on it too, that was after it was retired from being used to mow along the NYS Thruway for
many years. Someone used the wrong fluid, trans failed while I was operating it. It was a great tractor, was used for
everything on this farm back in the day.

That last question, should be the traction disconnect, sounds like it too was modified. Correct manuals for this tractor are
imperative if you'll be fooling with the S-O-S trans. Do not take the top cover off without reading 1st and be sure to use the
correct fluid, one that meets the Ford specification, wrong fluid will be the end of this transmission.

?????
X-ray vision?

The float needle needs to be designed to accept a float clip.

There really aren't many generic tractor fluids left out there that don't have 134D as listed on the compatibility charts. Or you can go to NH and buy NH134D oil for more money.
