Ford 3000 PTO shaft problem from hell

The PTO shaft on my 3000 (8 speed with live PTO) developed a crack and needed to be replaced. I ordered an after market shaft to replace the old one. It was #C5NNA728A. However, when I tried to fit it on the PTO coupling, it did not fit. It appears that the groves in the new shaft are not cut deep enough to accommodate the splines in the coupling. By measurement, off by .04".

Now, it is possible that a prior owner had a traumatic event and replaced the OEM shaft and coupling with a different after market set, causing the incompatibility.

There is an aftermarket PTO coupling #C5NN717A. Does anyone have any experience with fitting this coupling to the #C5NNA728A shaft? The other option is to try to remove material in the shaft groves. I would prefer not to do this.

Any advise greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JK.

(quoted from post at 13:29:07 04/10/22) can you flip the coupler over by chance?

If I flip it over, it goes onto the shaft a fraction of a inch further, but no more. Is this what you mean?
