You have to start working through the possibilities:

Fluid level O.K.?
Pump turning?
Pump primed?
Pump has flow?
If above O.K. then lift cover:
Control linkages O.K?
Valving working properly? Especially unload valve, is it stuck?

Hopefully you have a service manual to work through these things.

was wonder why there a valve on front of the pump on the gear pump ?

A valve on the pump on a 56 would be the flow control valve. That would make it a vane pump not a gear pump.

My screwdriver test may save you some diagnostic time I hope it works for ya. Its the first test I do if it works I am digging into the lift cover.
