I bought an 8000 ford with a turning PTO, assuming it was just a
clutch pack. I done a pressure test today and it stays at 125 psi
even as I throttle up. Looking in the shop manual it can be many
causes. Looking at the pump in the parts manual it looks like
theres not much that can go wrong in the pump. Can it be worn
that much? Considered rebuilding the pump but it might be just
as well to buy one. Any ideas or suggestions. Ill be rebuilding
the clutch pack too and the brake band for the PTO.
 
A PTO that doesn't stop is usually caused by a broken brake band on one of those models.

You can pull the PTO assembly through the pump mounting hole, however it's just as easy usually to split the tractor.
 
I was planning on the clutch pack rebuild. I was just curious if I should do the pump too since the pressure is about 10 pounds low. The pressure also dropped to nothing and then came back up. I found that odd and thought maybe its a spring and valve causing some of it.
 
Also at the end of last year while cutting hay at times the PTO would quit spinning. If Id stop and work the remote levelers you could hear a change and itd start turning and cutting again.
 
That's concerning. Only being 10 pounds low should not cause that. Does this tractor have dual power? If so, check the pressures again and compare them with the DP in both high and low range and report back. Do your pressure checks with hot oil, not cold.
 
I actually bought one without DP for less problems hopefully. It had ran for 15-20 minutes before the test yesterday. Ill wait for it to get warm again and run the tests again. Im also going to call an old Ford tractor mechanic tomorrow and bend his ear too.
