A very nice looking 1959 841-D with an Elenco conversion is for sale on FBM in Maysville Kentucky for 25K.

This is what my bitsa 841-DS/Elenco project aspires to!

I just cant decide which air cleaner setup I like better- the early manifold and airbox filter style (like here) or the later, air cleaner bolted to the side-
of-the-hood version?

841 D 25K

That is a sharp looking tractor, but not 25K sharp! Our 961-D, also a '59 has that style airbox/filter but the incoming pipe goes around the bottom and rear of the battery and breathes through the grill in the side of the hood.

Then just get a second one and put the above the hood air cleaner on that one. Get enough red paint so that you can paint the starter and genny too!

How does an 841 have 4 wheel drive? Or is that what "Elenco" implies?

Elenco is a company that added 4 wheel drive to tractors. Tony Jacobs is a member here and he now owns the company. There were a few other companies back in the day that did the same, but Elenco was the most popular, or at least they seem to have converted more tractors than any of the others.

Thank you, Sean.
It looks like the front end sits higher than my stock 841, with the axle and differential lower than the factory adjustable axle. Are taller rear tires part of the package?

The Elenco was an aftermarket 4x4 conversion added a sprocket internally to the splined intermediate shaft between the tractor's transmission and the rear
axle.

That sprocket, via a triple strand chain, mated to another sprocket inside an externally mounted 90 degree gearbox that was bolted to the round hole where the
(now relocated) PTO lever once resided.

From that gearbox a driveshaft with a torque-limiter clutch pack on the other end ran alongside the tractor and bolted to a modified Dodge Power Wagon/ WC
front axle.

Later gear boxes had the torque limiter clutch pack attached to the back of the box with a provision to release the clutch plates to give the tractor part-time,
selectable 4x4. Earlier tractors with the torque limiter box that attached to the front axle pinion shaft were full-time 4x4s- unless you add a set of lock out
hubs.

What is in the airbox?
I have a side mounted air cleaner but prefer the look of the airbox. Found one in rough shape that I am going to try to fix, but it is empty. Is it to be filled with a filter? Any oil?
Are there advantages/disadvantages to either?
Thank you for your thoughts!

The box is supposed to be filled with stainless steel wool. The same material as in the round ones on all of the XX0s and XX1s. The bottom, which you see held on by the two straps has oil in it. There is a level line formed into it. Those straps should be red. Henry didn't pay people to sit and mask parts off just to make it a little more pleasing to the eye.

That air cleaner and tail pipe would be a non runner for me. As well as painting the starter and generator Red.
