Im nearing the end of a 175 3 cylinder diesel overhaul and
was wondering what the Ford thinking was on a warm or post
run retorque of the head gasket? Thanks, Sam

Theres some that say to retorque the heads on any engine, I dont, I have let one set for a while or over night and then give them a final check
Theres nothing in the service manual about retorque

I like to let them set overnight and then re-torque them in the morning. When I say re-torque, I don't simply mean checking each one to make sure they're still tight. I actually loosen each bolt about one flat, one at a time, in the prescribed sequence, and then bring it back to a final torque. More often than not, you can actually see the bolt end up in a different place than when you started.

Note that this is NOT required, nor is it even a good idea, to do this on any engine with torque-to-yield bolts like are being used today.

Ages ago when the Deere NG's were fairly young there were some problems of head gasket failures. Someone came up with a similar idea. We would torque them all in sequence and then go back and loosen them one at a time and re torque in the same sequence. Never saw a gasket failure using that method.

I would add to this that the factory never retorqued any of them. That being said, I have done as Bern says. Loosen a tad and retorque in sequence.

The reason I was pretty adamant about a retorque is because many a factory gasket joint would start to leak over the years, usually just oil or water down the sides of the block, just enough to make a mess. I didn't want that with anything that had my name on the job.

I appreciate the input, Ill probably try the method of backing off and retorquing cold. Just trying to prevent problems down the road. Many thanks. Sam
