Bern or others-6000 regulator

My 6000 is putting out a little higher
voltage than I would like. Around 15
volts. Attached is a picture of my
regulator. I have the ability to set the
point gap but I don't see any way to
adjust the voltage. Does anyone see a way
to tweak the voltage down a little on this
regulator? Anyone know the correct point
gap settings?

13.5 to 15.2 is the acceptable range by battery manufacturers. You will probably do more harm to a functioning regulator than you will do good. More the spring than gap, if you insist.

I think you are correct. While paging
through my service manual, I see that the
voltage can be as high as 15.8 volts at 35
degrees. I think I will leave it alone.

You said the other day that you were at 15.5. Thats too high for my taste. Its up to you whether you do it or not.

Voltage is adjusted by bending the spring tab hinge. The service manual should say which one and which way I believe. I got mine right on the first try. Important note: checks must be made with the cover on.

Pop the hood on every car and truck that you own and note the maximum voltage you see with the engine running. I'd be surprised if you see anything over 14.5. It has been my experience that consistent voltages much higher than that causes batteries to sweat and lose water. Note only is exposing the internal plates a bad thing, the moisture on top of the battery combines with dirt to make a nice conductive path to slowly discharge the battery when it sits for long periods of time.

I think the reason for such a wide range of acceptable values in the old days is because it's very hard to get a points-type regulator to settle in on a narrow range of voltages. I know that sometimes I have really struggled to get one adjusted within an acceptable range and be consistent.
