175/192 3 cylinder diesel rear seal/bearing

My memory is not quite up to the task and the service manual is a little vague. Im reassembling a Ford 3 cylinder diesel based on a 175 block. The rear main bearing housing has a groove in each side and I have two rubber strips which seem like they belong. Ones an easy fit, the other is snug. I also have two small metal rods that look like they might fit in the groove on the outside of the rubber strips? Any guidance or suggestions for putting this together so it doesnt leak? Thanks, Sam

I'll give your question a bump to the top. I'd also love to hear from someone that has a tried and true method for installing the rear seals on these engines.

I put a small amount of silicone sealer on the rubber seals to make them slick and install them as far down as they will go
The rubber seals have a large grove on the out side and a small one on the inside, I drive the pins down thru the small inside grove, this pushes the seal out and swells it against the block and sides of the main cap for a tight seal
Install the rear main seal and then the cork gasket between the block and separator plate
Make sure to put some sealer on the rear cam gear plug before installing it

Thanks for the info. It sounds like we do
it about the same way, but I've had my
share of trouble with rear main leaks on
these Fords.

I put a little silicone on the side seals
too to help them slide. I also put a very
small amount under the bearing cap leading
over to the side seals.

This might be common sense, but it is
extremely important to keep the silicone
amount to a minimum so that none
inadvertently finds it's way onto the seal
surface or even worse, the bearing.

Can you tell me what the horseshoe shaped
cork gasket is for? I got a gasket set
recently that didn't even include the norm
engine plate gasket, it only had the
horseshoe one, which seems to be in every
gasket set I get. I've never found a use
for it.

Service book says to put a small amount of sealer along the bottom edge of the block were the rear cap goes

Seams like there's always a gasket or two with now place to go, right now the horse shoe shaped one is eluding me and I gave all my spare gaskets to my brother for a engine job he was working on.
Post a photo of it

I hope Im including two pictures the gaskets that came with my kit. Im thinking this application requires the one that fully encircles the crank and the other is for the later blocks with the separate seal housing? Thanks for the guidance so far.
