Ford 600 stuck in 2nd gear

I was shifting to second gear the other day and it locked up on me. I can't get it to fully go into gear or fully disengage. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I took the shifter cover off my 4spd 841 and used a long screwdriver to gently but firmly move the levers and gears around, with the fluid drained so I could see. I didn't think it would work, otherwise I would've video taped it.

The best advice I heard for future reference was to make sure the shifter is in neutral before changing to another gear, it's not a sportscar. Or so i was told.

I've had this happen twice. Trick for me was to jack up one rear wheel off the ground (used a bottle jack on the frame) and turn/jiggle it while moving things around in there with a big screwdriver. Couldn't loosen it up before the jack, came loose easily as soon as I did that

my 641 has done this twice. Could move some parts in there around with the long screwdriver but it wasn't doing the trick. My answer: jack one of the rear wheels up off the ground (I used a bottle jack) so I could jiggle it while I used the screwdriver. It came immediately loose

I have see the same thing happen on farm tractors, garden tractors, and several cars over the years. Things do not have to be worn very badly for it to happen.

Once I dropped off my '67 Chevelle SS to have new tires installed. When I got in to drive it away, it was parked weird. I did not think much about it 'til I tried to back out of the spot and stalled the engine. I just happened to peek in the rear view mirror to see the all of guys standing inside looking out. It was stuck in gear. You would make it go forward, if you had the shifter in neutral, but if you tried any other gear it was locked up.

I went back into the shop and asked who had "messed up" my car. Of course they all said it was fine when they parked it. As the manager told me I was not permitted in, I walked into their shop, picked up a big wrench on my way to get a floor jack. As I rolled it outside I guess he thought better of trying to stop me.

All I had to do was move all of the shift levers on the side transmission into neutral. While I was under the car, I could see bits of rubber under the car from the rear tires. And there were no stickers on them. The fronts still had stickers.

I made it clear that he was either giving me new tires for the rear or my money back for them. That was 1972, and is actually one the last times I took a car any place for service other than under warranty, and not stayed to watch them work on it.
