860 power steering issues

I have an early 860 with power
steering and a loader. I have been
having problems with the power
steering. It has become virtually
non-existent. I have checked
things over, fluid is fine,
replaced the cylinders a few years
ago and have rebuilt them. I also
had new Pistons made for the
cylinders with an extra groove so
I could put two packings in. A
year or two ago I checked the pump
flow and pressure and it was
within specs. Since it's been a
while I can't recall the actual
numbers but I know at the time it
was okay. The only place I haven't
been is into the steering gear
under the dash. Is there anything
in there that will prevent the
power steering from operating? I
was told that the steering wheel
should move up and down slightly
upon turning it from the straight
ahead position, and that does
happen. I really don't know where
else to look for the problem. Any
ideas?

It is quite common for the PS control valve to need attention after decades of use. Debris interferes with the valves and springs fail.

Rebuilding the valve is rather simple once it has been removed from the tractor.

It would be wise to re-bush and reseal the steering gear and replace the thrust bearings while the control valve is removed.
