Ford 6600 injector pump

Original pump failed. Bought a rebuilt pump thru a local diesel pump dealer and replaced the old one. After priming the fuel system the tractor started and ran great. After not starting the tractor for a day or so tractor won't start. Have to re-prime the fuel system to get it to start. Have no fuel leaks anywhere. Does this rebuilt pump have an internal fuel leak that it looses it's prime in a day or two? Do I need to replace the pump again?

If the fuel tank sat below the pump, I'd say you had an air leak in a line external to the pump. You don't mention whether the pump is inline or rotary, but regardless, it should not lose prime very easily when the tank is above the fuel pump without showing a noticeable leak. I can't think of anything internal to the pump that would cause a loss of prime, so I wouldn't blame the pump or rush to replace it.

When you bleed it before you go to start it, do you see a lot of air come out of the bleed screw? If so, you must have a loose fitting or a misplaced fuel filter seal somewhere I would think. But again, by all rights it should make for an external leak that you can visually see.

Thanks Bern, The pump is an inline Simms pump. Buy working the lever on the hand pump and turning the motor over it eventually starts. I don'ty see any leaks.

Let it set overnight and then crack the bleed screw on the filter and lever the hand pump. See if any air comes out. If none, then I'm thinking you have a lift pump problem. Checking fuel pressure at the injection pump inlet would be a good way to see that.

Hi Bern, You said the lift pump might be the problem. This a new one that came with the rebuilt injector pump. I know there is a check valve inside this fuel lift pump. Could it be that this check valve is not holding the prime after the engine is shut down for a day or so? That would mean the fuel is going back into the fuel tank? Going to try tomorrow and see if when I crack the bleed ports on the filter and see if it pumps fuel out or not. So far the dealer where I bought the injector pump has not been of any help.

It's pretty much impossible for the fuel to go back into the tank because the fuel level in the tank is higher than the pump. I was merely speculating that maybe you have a weak lift pump that is lazy in bringing up the transfer pressure, which is why I suggested installing a pressure gauge if you find no evidence of air in the system.

Is it possible that my Fuel lift pump is leaking down over a day or so and not holding its prime? After I get it the engine primed it will start. But after letting it sit overnight it won't sart again without having to go through the bled operations again. I want to think that after you get the system bled and the tractor starts and runs great the Lift pump should its prime. Right?

Bern, When I cracked the bleed plug on the filter and worked the lever on the lift pump I got clear diesel fuel out. No Air. This is after the tractor sat for 2 days. So now what could be the problem?
