Ford 600 serial number

I found on the flat part of the housing behind the starter the following numbers. 3 digit "640"
Below that number there is "13900"
The 6 means its a 600 series and the 4 means a 4 speed Trans.
What does the 0 mean?
the 13900 is the serial number? What year model is it? 1954 or later?

**0 - Hundred series, '55 - '57

1954 Serial number 1 - 10614
1955 Serial number 10615 - 77270
1956 Serial number 77271 - 116367
1957 Serial number 116368 - up

According to your reply, my tractor with the S/N 13900 it's a 1955 model
and that means that Ford built 66,655 in 1955. In 1954 only 10,614? Big difference.

No *00 series tractors were built as 1954 models. There were some built in late 1954 as they transitioned from the NAA series to the hundred series, but they were considered 1955 models. This model transition accounts for the low number built in 1954.

Your 640 is part of the 600 series. The last 0 designates the hundred series. The *01 series came next in 1958 with a few of them being built in late '57.

To confuse things further the model year (which is sometimes used for parts ordering) can vary from the production year. Per the Ford Parts List the model years for the 600 series is 55 to 57 not 54 to 57. BTW the serial number chart commonly found on the Internet and on this web site (link below) goes by production date. Also below is a model year summary for various tractor series taken from the parts list.

YT Mag 600, 700, 800, 900 serial numbers

when I was working at a Ford dealer in Atlanta back in the early 80's, we were always told the the NAA production
stopped in the fall of 54 and then the line was changed to begin production of the hundred series, I'm sure some got build before the first of the year

The 6 at the beginning combined with the 0 at the end means that it is a 600 series tractor. If the last digit was a 1 then it would be a 601 series tractor, which was what replaced the 600 series tractor.

The middle digit specifies transmission and PTO options. The 4 in the middle position means that it has a 4 speed transmission and transmission driven (non-live) 540 rpm PTO.

That means that it was assembled in late 1954 for the 1955 model year.

This makes since as this one has a number of differences from other 55-57 I,ve seen. Most notable it has a cast housing on the out end of the exhaust that directs the exhaust up. When I took it off to replace muffler I found it was all original. It also has a dozer blade attached that appears to be original., so maybe a demo for the new series!!
