I have recently added to my classic ford group a 640. The clutch will just barely
disengage with the pedal all the way down. And when raising it only a couple of
inches the clutch is fully engaged. So I believe I am in need of a new clutch. This
will be a new venture for me, so is there anything in particular I should be aware
of? Are there other things that should receive attention as long as the tractor is
split? Also, all of the many sellers of antique/classic tractor parts sell a clutch
kit consisting of the same components. Yet the prices vary from about $100 to $200.
Is there that much difference in quality? I don't mind paying more for better
quality, but don't want to pay more for the same thing. Any advice and/or help is
greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
You may be able to adjust the pedal, if so, it's really easy. There are videos on how, and there are instructions in both the user manual and service manuals for your tractor.
 
I say this, having just replaced my 841 clutch. My new clutch behaved exactly as you're describing after replacement. A quick pedal adjustment and it works perfectly now.
 
Thanks, ZehnX. I have tried adjusting the petal
and am at the end of the bolt. Maybe I need to
revisit that and make sure I am adjusting in the
correct direction.
 
As others have mentioned, your clutch engagement symptoms are generally those of a new clutch that might need some adjustment. Worn clutchs generally dont engage until the linkage is at its maximum return travel (and maybe even slip at that point).
 
Take a look at the external linkage. Years (over 35) ago, my 8N exhibited the same symptoms. I broke it apart and replaced all clutch parts. Same problem. Broke the tractor in half several times and no help. I talked to a Ford mechanic, and he said to get down under the linkage and look up. DANG!!! Double DANG!!! The external link was cracked. When I depressed the clutch pedal, the crack opened up.
