Working on what I believe is a 1972 4310. Are these positive or negative ground? The reason I ask is, I bench tested the starter, hooked the positive to the starter solenoid and negative to the case. It spins but I think it is spinning backwards. It doesn't spin toward the tapper in the teeth of the starter. Thats why I'm wondering if its positive ground and I should hook the negative to the solenoid and positive to the case.

A 1972 4310 would be a 3 cylinder 4000 series narrow orchard model. It was 12 volt negative ground from the factory.

I'm pretty sure that the starter doesn't care about polarity. Did you test it on the bench with the polarity reversed? I'm reasonably certain that it should spin in the same direction no matter which polarity you use.

I hooked the positive from battery to the solenoid and neg to case of starter. (neg ground). The gears on the starter are tapered on one side to mesh with the flywheel. Problem I have its rotating in the opposite direction of the tapper.

As I said, that tractor, as with all Ford tractors made after 1965, left the factory with a negative ground electrical system. The starter should only turn in one direction no matter which polarity you power it with. Did you try connecting it up with the polarity reversed to see if it spins the same way?

I'm not sure what you mean by the gears being tapered (or tappered as you spelled it a couple of times). There is only one gear on the starter. Do you mean the gear teeth? What do you mean by tapered? The teeth on the starter of my '73 4000 are symmetrical on both sides of each tooth. Perhaps the teeth on yours are worn on one side? What do the teeth on the flywheel look like?

Was there a problem that made you decide to remove the starter?
