Differential lock on Ford 2000

I had some very knowledgeable people help last time I was here so I have another question.

I have a 1966 Ford 2000 diesel. There seems to be no differential lock on it. Were some models made without this feature? Or has it been removed? I could have benefited from its use in the recent snow we had.

Thanks up front for any advice offered.

Are your axle housings round or square?
On a '66, I'd bet on them being round.
Differential locks were never available
on the round housing axles. Later, Ford
switched to the square housings as used
on the 3000. At that point, the
differential lock became a factory option
(but was never a standard feature on
2000's).

You are correct.
Early 2000 had round axle housings.
Late 2000 had square housings like 3000s.
I think the change came late.
1973 or thereabouts.
I believe diff lock was still an option on square axle tractors.
I had a 1973 or 74 3000 with square axles but no diff lock and no provision on the casting for the pivot arm.

The diff lock was always an option on the '65-'75 3 cylinder tractors. The older parts drawings even say that, but the current parts drawings on the New Holland web site don't say so. My '73 4000 doesn't have it. I've never needed it with the steering brakes.

Well, there are always exceptions it seems. This tractor has square axle housings. It was identified as a 1966 produced in Belgium using the numbers found above the starter. (see my earlier post 'Looking for help determining what model year my Ford 2000 is')

I don't see anyplace on the casting that would have accommodated a differential lock. I'll just have to use the steering brakes once I get them working again. That will be a summer project.

Again, thanks to everyone. That answers my question.

The numbers above the starter are stamped into the transmission housing, and that just tell you about the tractor that the transmission was in when it left the factory. The transmission or the rear axle could have been swapped out at some point over the years.

That could easily be true. This tractor may be a hybrid, a mix of parts. And probably is knowing my luck. Would there be any other numbers or identifying characteristics that might indicate the year of the rear axle and/or possibly the engine? I know it really doesn't matter as far as using it goes but I'm just curious. How it came to land here in Kansas from Belgium would be an interesting story to know also.

All of the major components on the tractor have date codes on them for when they were assembled, engine, transmission, hydraulic lift top cover and rear axle center housing. Some rear axle trumpets have date codes on them as well, but those are probably casting dates rather than assembly dates. If you can find all of those date codes you can come up with a consensus of when the majority of them were assembled, If one is way off from the others then it was most likely replaced at some point5 over the years. The tractor that the majority of the components would have been assembled a few weeks to a few months after all of the components.

Thank you much for all the info. As I get it cleaned up I will record all numbers. I find it interesting to know the history.

Purchase wise, I only know my dad bought it from another fellow locally who wanted it to move large round bales and when it wouldn't lift them he wanted to sell. My dad took it and adjusted the hyd. pop off on the bucket and it raised bales just fine.

Of course the seller wanted it back. Luckily for me my dad kept it and here we are.

Thanks again
